Last week, Warfighters United founder, Eric Calley spent seven days just west of St. Louis with the FOCUS Marines Foundation, a nonprofit that runs an intensive, week-long program for veterans navigating the transition from military to civilian life. FMF’s “FOCUS” course brings together a small cohort (typically up to 25 participants) four times a year for structured, evidence-informed work on identity, goals, communication, and relationships—delivered by a team that includes Marine veterans and volunteer mentors. 

Throughout the week, participants dive into guided sessions that explore core concepts like commitment, communication, honesty, and success. They learn practical tools for working through anger and fear, and for rebuilding strong interpersonal connections—skills that matter long after the course ends. 

Many attendees arrive carrying invisible wounds—post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, survivor’s guilt—and leave with a clearer sense of who they are, where they’re going, and how to get there. FMF complements the residency with ongoing support (ReFOCUS), including regular mentor touchpoints and refreshers on the lessons from the week. 

One thing we admire: FMF absorbs 100% of participant costs to attend, with transportation being the single biggest line item since most veterans travel in from across the country. The program is made possible by a largely volunteer force; aside from a small staff, board members and Marine team leaders are not compensated. 

Warfighters United exists to connect veterans with real resources and real people who will walk with them—no stigma, no judgment. Our co-founder’s week at FOCUS deepened our partnership and gave us even more insight into how this curriculum changes lives. We’ll be sharing conversations on the Warfighters United Podcast with graduates, facilitators, and leaders so more veterans (and families) can understand what to expect and how to prepare.
